Christian Flühr's Project 3M:
The Bond on Boards in the Biggest Mission.
3 Million Vertical Meters in 365 Days – Lisbon to Vladivostok on Skis
May 26, 2025 – Ski world record holder Christian Flühr is set to face his biggest challenge in 2025. He's embarking on a mission that breaks new ground in skiing. After 14 world records, including 264 hours of non-stop skiing 17 years ago, Flühr aims to set another milestone with his Project 3M. His last Guinness ski record dates from January 31, 2025. After a 15-year hiatus, he set a new benchmark at KitzSki and in the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser.
Pushing the Boundaries of What's Possible
Christian Flühr is no stranger to the record-breaking business. In January 2025, the Oberhausen native returned to the slopes. He set a new Guinness record by using 80 different lifts, but this record is just a small warm-up for his new, ambitious project.
Just a few weeks ago, "the Bond on Boards" declared: "It will be higher, further, bigger, better, faster, and, above all, longer than anything before." These attributes describe it aptly: It's not just about a record on one ski day or 264 hours of skiing. This time, it's about a year-long record hunt spanning 365 days.
365 Days, 3 Million Vertical Meters
What's behind Project 3M? The name is deliberately chosen: Flühr plans to conquer an incredible 3 million vertical meters on skis within a year. For comparison: This is equivalent to a distance of approximately 3,000 km, the distance from Frankfurt to the Canary Islands. Since Flühr cannot ski vertically down mountains, the actual linear distance will be four times as long. This corresponds to the distance from Lisbon on the Atlantic to Vladivostok on the Pacific.
This means an enormous daily challenge for Flühr. To achieve the goal, he must statistically cover over 8,200 vertical meters on each of the 365 days. A good skier manages about 4,000 to 5,000 vertical meters in a day under ideal conditions. Flühr will need to achieve 12,000 vertical meters per day on the estimated 250 ski days – three times what an average skier manages on a good day. And all without longer breaks.
Passion or Torture?
Why is he putting himself through this? "I love challenges. Project 3M is a new challenge with many unknowns that I'm happy to take on," explains Flühr. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of around 20 people from several European countries is working flat out on the implementation. Team leader Sabrina Hoever-Houben and Christian Flühr have been intensely discussing details in recent weeks to ensure the success of Project 3M. The starting signal is expected at the end of September 2025, when the first snowflakes fall on the European glaciers.
A Record Across Borders
Flühr's planning goes far beyond the usual ski resorts. He will be on the road for approximately 250 of the 365 days. He will visit a variety of ski resorts in different countries. The record will also partially be set in indoor ski halls, on mats, and in unusual locations. Coordinating this over an entire year is particularly challenging.
Many ski resorts on Flühr's list have already agreed. Further details on the route and record conditions will be announced in early September 2025, once the final plans are complete.
The Big Goal: 3 Million Vertical Meters by May 2, 2026
The current world record stands at around 2.6 million vertical meters and was set in the United States. Flühr plans to surpass this mark by the season finale at the end of March 2026 in the classic winter ski resorts. He aims to reach his personal goal of 3 million vertical meters on his birthday, May 2, 2026. After that, the bonus phase follows over the summer.
The Greatest Ski World Record of All Time
Project 3M is more than just another record attempt. It is a visionary project that elevates skiing to a new level. Christian Flühr wants to push into entirely new areas. This is not only due to his exceptional achievements but also because he is redefining the boundaries of what is possible in skiing.
